TUC seeks policies to promote decent work, social integration

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) Lagos State Council has called for adequate measures and policies that will promote decent work and encourage social integration.
 
The union said there is the need for the government, employers and labour leaders to ensure measures are put in place in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions to provide good and quality life for workers.
 
This was stated in a communique issued at the end of a two-day training workshop organised by the council with the theme ‘Decent Work and Employment Relations: The Impact for a Smart City’. 

 
The Chairman and Secretary, TUC, Lagos State Council, Gbenga Ekundayo and Abiodun Aladetan, respectively, condemned in strong terms, all forms of indecent work practices deployed by employers under the guise of casualisation, outsourcing, ad-hoc staffing, slavery, child labour and arbitrary disengagement, among others, which they said, are antithetical to the tenets of decent work as guaranteed by several labour legislations. 
 
The workers stressed the need for both employers and union leaders to embrace negotiations and dialogue to avoid lingering labour issues and industrial actions.
 
Among other issues, the workers stressed that since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the world of work has been under attack even as the country’s labour law is on trial due to the high reported cases of abuse of workers right at the workplaces.
 
The union restated its commitment to sustaining robust employee-employer relations through collective bargaining and to promote workers welfare in the state.
 
The workers commended the Lagos State Government for putting the welfare and interest of workers on the front burner despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on the resources of the state.
